What is osteopathic treatment?
Osteopathic manipulation medicine (OMM) is physical manipulation of the bones and body tissues for better body alignment, mechanics and functioning.  OMM treats the body as one unit, it emphasizes the interrelationship between structure and function with a particular appreciation for the body's ability to heal itself.  OMM is performed by a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), a physician who has training in neuromusculoskeletal medicine.

Do I need OMM?
OMM is useful in the treatment of many physical illness, not just physical complaints.  OMM treatments are targeted at correcting structural problems within the body so the whole body can function better.  Treatments can help acute or chronic problems, such as: low back pain, headaches, joint injuries, overuse injuries, muscle strains, sinusitis, constipation.  All treatments are individualized to best treat each patient.

What does a treatment involve?
OMM usually requires treatment in several areas of the body.  Treatments are determined at the time of exam, depending on structural exam findings.  Some treatment techniques are passive, requiring the patient to simply relax while the doctor does the manipulation or massage.  Some treatments have the patient actively participate in the treatment.  Treatments are gentle and should leave the patient comfortable and relaxed.

What should I expect after my OMM appointment?
OMM should help you to feel better and more relaxed.
